How Online Steel Auctions Work: A Buyer's Guide

If you've never bought materials at an online auction before, the process can feel unfamiliar — but it's actually simpler than most people expect. Here's what to know before you place your first bid on MaterialBid.

Step 1: Create Your Account

Registration is instant. Head to the MaterialBid website, fill out a short sign-up form, and you're ready to browse listings. During sign-up, you'll also see a checkbox to opt into email updates — check that box when new materials come in!

Step 2: Put Down Your Deposit

Before you can bid, MaterialBid requires a refundable $1,000 deposit. This isn't a fee — it's a good-faith commitment that keeps the auction fair for serious buyers and sellers alike. There's no geographic restriction on who can buy; contractors, ranchers, and fabricators from anywhere in the country are welcome.

Step 3: Browse and Bid

Listings include photos, specs, and quantities for materials like pipe, structural steel, smooth plate, rectangular tubing, and gates. Once you find something you need, place your bid. MaterialBid uses a soft close — if a bid comes in near the end of the auction window, the clock extends. That means no last-second sniping; everyone gets a fair shot to respond.

Step 4: Win and Pay

If you're the winning bidder, full payment is due within 7 days. Once payment clears, you're responsible for arranging your own shipping or freight pickup — more on that in a future post.

Tip: If you run into any issues lining up freight, just reach out to us — we work with a network of trusted freight brokers and can help get you a quote.

Step 5: Coordinate Pickup or Delivery

MaterialBid doesn't handle freight, so it's on the buyer to line up a hauler or arrange pickup directly with the seller. Winning bidders have 30 days from the day the auction ends to pick up their material, so there's no need to rush — just make sure it's arranged within that window. If you're new to this step, we'll break down how to estimate freight costs in an upcoming post — and as mentioned above, we're happy to point you to one of our freight brokers for a quote if you get stuck.

Why Buy This Way?

Online auctions cut out a lot of the back-and-forth of traditional surplus buying. You see exactly what's available, you set your own price ceiling, and you're not waiting on a salesperson to call you back. For ranchers, farmers, and contractors who need materials on their own timeline, that's a real advantage.
